Malaysia's Proton recalls cars over safety concern
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia's national carmaker Proton has recalled almost 16,000 cars of two of its models over malfunctioning risks.
Proton said in a statement received Friday that it was recalling Gen2 and Satria Neo cars made between 2004 and 2008. It urged owners of the models to bring them in for an inspection.
Routine tests have found irregularities with the clock spring _ which connects switches and air bags to radio, horn and cruise control, the statement said. These include friction noise within the steering wheel, activation of horn or car lights without warning, audio control switch malfunction and deployments of the driver's side air bag.
"Although the number is small, the safety of our customers is paramount and we apologize for any inconvenience caused," said Proton Holdings managing director Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamad Tahir. "We hope our customers understand that this recall is necessary to ensure their continued confidence in the safety and performance of their vehicles."
Proton returned to the black in the financial year ended March, but is under pressure to bolster exports for its long-term survival.
In August, the carmaker reported a 55 percent jump in quarterly profit, posting a net profit of 84.7 million ringgit ($27 million) for the quarter through June.
